Parents As Teachers
Jefferson R-VII School District Parents As Teachers (PAT)

Building a Strong Foundation As a parent, you are your child's first and most important teacher.  Your home is your child's first school.  Your child will learn more during the early years than at any other time in life.  How your child grows and learns during these crucial early years will affect his or her later development and success in school.

Parents as Teachers What is Parents as Teachers?  Parents as Teachers is a voluntary and flexible program, funded through the schools, that provides parents with the information and tools they need to become their child's best first teacher.  It offers free to all district families with prenatal to pre-kindergarten age children:
  • Developmental and Health Screenings offered yearly by a certified Parent Educator and a Registered Nurse.

  • Personal Home Visits tailored to your schedule by a certified Parent Educator.

  • Information on what to look for and expect as your child grows and develops.

  • Group Connections offered monthly.

The Home-School partnership That Works
Parents as Teachers has been found to be highly effective. An independent evaluation showed that participating children at age three:

  • Were significantly more advanced in language development than other children.
  • Had made greater strides in problem solving and other intellectual skills.
  • Were further along in social development than their peers.
